Imphal, August 04 2020:
The Protection and Preservation Committee Manipur (PPCM) has said that the 74th Manipur Independence Day will be observed on August 14 at the office of PPCM with a simple function due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PPCM, in a statement, highlighting the importance of the day said after the 1891 Anglo-Manipur war, Manipur came under the rule of British Empire for 56 years.
However, Manipur again got the opportunity to stand by itself on August 14, 1947.On this day, by raising the flag that has 'Ebudhou Pakhangba' printed on it at Kangla, Manipur was declared independent, PPCM said.
The new generation needs to understand the significance of this day and observe the day with honour, it further said.
PPCM said due to the historical blunders of the older generation, the younger generation are now facing the consequences, however the younger generation should make sure that this does not happen again.
People who are working voluntarily to make sure that nothing bad happens to this land should observe this day at their local level by duely following the SOP of COVID-19, PPCM appealed.
Meanwhile, Peter Laishram has been appointed as the convenor of the students' wing of PPCM which consists of MSF, SUK, KSA and AMSU for the term 2020-22 .
Subsequently, PPCM has also appealed to the people not to communalise any issue.
"Manipur being a land inhabited by many ethnic groups one should be mindful of what one does.
Things that one does should not be for the benefit of only a single community.
If anything happens like this, PPCM will stand against it".
Stating that the incident that happened at Wakha in Imphal East should not be blown out of proportion, PPCM appealed to the people to be fair.
