Imphal, December 18:
Even as the State Government has suspended four State security personnel in connection with the Wangjing firing incident that left eight persons including five teachers injured, the Human Rights Law Network, Manipur has sought prosecution of the security personnel for awarding exemplary punishment.
The Network filed a complaint petition before the Manipur Human Rights Commission based on the news report of the firing which appeared in The Sangai Express on December 16.Mention may be made here that a combined team of IRB and Commandos of Thoubal district police fired indiscriminately on a passenger jeep without giving any warning on the night of December 15 near YK College, Wangjing.
At least eight innocent civilians, six of whom were occupants of the jeep and two other bystanders were injured in the firing.
The petition filed by HRLN co-ordinator M Rakesh, though endorsed that three IRB personnel and one police commando, involved in the firing, have been suspended prayed before the rights panel to recommend the State for grating immediate interim relief to the injured persons.
It also prayed for taking up necessary measures and precaution so as to avoid occurrence of such ugly incident in future and to recommend any appropriate action, which the Commission deems fit and proper.
The matter is likely to be taken up on Monday, said Commission sources.
