New Delhi, December 18:
Members of Parliament from the North-East today met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and asked him to take steps for restoration of peace in the region and its faster development.
The 28 MPs, who met the Prime Minister for about 30 minutes, also submitted a memorandum suggesting setting up of a regional infrastructure development authority for the North-East, flood control measures, introduction of more international flights from Guwahati and reservation of 100 per cent of jobs in the third and fourth grade for candidates from the region.
They asked Manmohan Singh to initiate steps for opening border trading posts and establishment of Consulates General of Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand and Singapore in the Assam capital so that people from the region could easily acquire visas.
"The Prime Minister assured that he would examine all the proposals and ask the DONER Ministry to coordinate the process," MP from Assam Arun Kumar Sarma told PTI after the meeting.
"The North-East is lagging behind the rest of the country because of violence and floods and quick steps have to be taken for its development," it said.
