Imphal, December 18:
Manipur Human Rights Commission has maintained that the Manipur Pollution Control Board should ensure that a smoke emanating from one Premkumar Tyre Workshop at Chingmeirong is within the permissible level.
The decision of the rights panel is based on a complaint petition filed by one Lourembam Tiken Singh, whose residence is located adjacent to the workshop, alleging of the firm causing serious noise and air pollution detrimental to health of the family.
Owing to such disturbances his children could not concentrate on studies while his wife is suffering from an unknown disease, the petitioner said urging the MHRC to initiate necessary action to control the hazardous pollutants release from the workshop.
In its recent proceedings, it is learnt that the report submitted by Pollution Control Board (Oct 12, 2004) detected pollutants produced by the work shop to be beyond restricted level.
Upon such report, the Commission observed that the pollution has caused health hazard to family members of the petitioner and that the workshop is established within residential area.
The Commission Chairman Justice (Retd) WA Shishak hence maintained that should Premkumar - owner of the workshop continue to run the workshop without adhering to the prescribed level of pollution as per law, the concerned authority should act for closure of the said workshop.
Premkumar should also take immediate action to ensure that the permissible pollution level prescribed for workshop is strictly complied to, the Commission observed.
