Trees cut to build refugees' shelter homes

Moreh, March 27 2023: Jungle cutting work in areas around Haolenphai village which have been identified for construction of shelter homes for Myanmarese refugees has been taken up by villagers along with the refugees on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, a refugee expressed gratitude to the Manipur government for taking up relief measures for the Mynamarese refugees on humanitarian ground as they (refugees) have been living a wretched life since fleeing from the restive situation in Myanmar.

While revealing that they have somehow managed to escape from the horrible situation in Myanmar and entered Manipur through Moreh, he termed as a blessing that Manipur government has come to their rescue and provided shelter in the state.

It is hoped that the Manipur government would do the needful for providing necessary materials for their survival till the tense situation in Myanmar subsides, expressed the refugee.

Sources informed that over 150 refugees from Myanmar are taking in the state following violence in Myanmar.

The refugees include an MP of Myanmar, women and children.

It is said that under the directive of the union home ministry, chief minister N Biren despatched a ministerial team to Moreh town to assess the situation.

Subsequently, the team comprising ministers Th Basantakumar, Awangbow Newmai and Letpao Haokip instructed authorities concerned to prepare for setting up a temporary shelter camp at Haolenphai village.

During their interaction with the group of refugees, Myanmarese MP Thangsel Haokip, who was among those taking shelter at the village, urged the ministerial team to provide them shelter till the time violent clashes between the Myanmarese military and the People's Defence Force (PDF) rebels continue in Saingang region of Myanmar.

He also urged the ministerial team to allow the refugees to work on Indian soil for their livelihood.

On the other hand, minister Letpao said that the Myanmarese nationals would be deported to their land soon after the war-like situation in Myanmar subsides.
