WMC airs plight of Assam's Meetei to ECI

Imphal, March 27 2023:
A team of World Meetei Council (WMC), Assam met officials of Election Commission of India (ECI) who are currently in Guwahati, on Monday.
During the meeting, the WMC team submitted a memorandum with an appeal to review the electorally fragmented Meetei (Manipuri) community in Assam, whose predominant and contiguous habitat villages have been erroneously bifurcated in the last delimitation exercise held in 1976 .
The memorandum pointed out that Lakhipur assembly constituency (LA-13), which has maximum population of Meetei community, needs to be redrawn by integrating the contiguous Meetei villages in order to empower the voiceless community.
The WMC team comprising Assam unit president Nabakishore Yumnam, general secretary Irungbam Hari, vice-chairmen of WMC CEC Y Dhan & Colonel Gokul Chandra (Retired) and finance secretary Moirangthem Ranjit met election commissioner Arun Goel at Hotel Radisson Blu, Guwahati.
While acknowledging the memorandum, the election commissioner assured of looking into their request and told the team that ECI may further communicate with WMC on this matter if needed, informed a press statement of WMC.
