Imphal, March 31 2023:
Apropos the allegations and claims made by Konsakhul village authority and various Liangmei civil bodies in the wake of inter-village feud that erupted on March 26, Leilon Vaiphei village authority has said that the unfortunate conflict erupted out of misunderstanding over destruction of fencing erected for rearing Mithun/Sandang by Leilon Area Siel (Mithun) Society (LASS) in which both the communities are members.
Without proper fencing, the brunt of wandering Mithun is faced by both the communities the bovines destroy agricultural crops at Duhlian Khumman, a reserved land for agriculture by both parties.
To curb the menace of Mithun, Leilon Vaiphei, Leilon Khunou, Konsakhul and L Phaijang (Haraothel) villages in a joint meeting held on March 24, 2001 at the residence of Konsakhul chief with Lamthanang alias AB Kabe as chairman and Pasci Vaiphei as secretary reached an agreement.
However, the fencing erected by the society (LASS) was destroyed by Konsakhul villagers in which Lungenbou, son of Dirangbou of Konsakhul was actively involved.
As informed by members of LASS, Lungenbou is notorious for shooting and killing Mithun reared within the demarcated area and destroying fences.
The culprits involved in destroying of fences were summoned by the society numerous times for discussion.
After they failed to turn up, Lungenbou and his colleagues were stopped on their way to their village at Leilon Vaiphei village for discussion on March 26.As Lungenbou failed to response to the peaceful approach of the society, the agitated members broke the glasses of the JCB excavator in which he was seated and handed over to Leimakhong police station, Leilon Vaiphei village authority said, adding that the allegation of abduction and brutal assault was baseless.
While stating that destruction of the JCB belonging to one Edal Singh of Singjamei was out of anger and misunderstanding at that moment, Leilon Vaiphei village authority further said that an amicable solution had already been reached between Leilon Area Siel (Mithun/Sandang) Society and the JCB owner on March 30 .
Refuting the claim of Leilon villagers attacking Konsakhul villagers and injuring them, Leilon Vaiphei village authority said that it was Konsakhul villagers who attacked Leilon villagers twice on March 28 intruding into the village with sticks, stones, knives and catapults and destroying barricades, houses, and properties of Leilon Vaiphei villagers.
Many villagers were injured in the attack with some requiring medical attention.
They also attacked the chief's residence with an attempt to murder the chief, destroying some portions of the house and properties, it said and condemned the heinous crime.
While terming as baseless of allegations made regarding the obstruction of pilgrims from Imphal, Leilon Vaiphei village authority said that no such incident ever happened and it was just a way of seeking false sympathy from the valley brethren.
Negating the claim made by Konsakhul village authority of Leilon Vaiphei village being a tenant of Konsakhul, Leilon Vaiphei village authority said that the land lease agreement (supposed to be dated 12 October 1920) brought out by Konsakhul village authority is baseless and the document itself is a concocted one.
Leilon Vaiphei Village Authority is ready to stand against the said document and if need be, to go for forensic testing or carbon dating to test its genuineness.
Further, there is no oral or written history of Leilon Vaiphei village ever making any payment of paddy as a tenant, Leilon Vaiphei village authority maintained.
The Leilon Vaiphei Villagers also appreciated the initiatives taken up by the government agencies and various civil and religious society organisations for maintaining peace and understanding among the people and their endeavours to bring an amicable solution to the issue, the village authority added.
