Protesters seek death penalty for murder accused

Bishnupur, March 31 2023:
A large number of women stormed the CJM Bishnupur Court when Heishnam Bigyananda (33), son of (late) H Joymangol of Ningthoukhong Mamang Lamyai Taothabi Pat, who is accused of murdering his wife Ningthoujam (n) Heishnam (o) Asha (23) by stabbing and slitting her throat on March 26, was brought for producing before the Court on Friday.
On hearing that the accused will be produced before the Court, numerous women led by JAC Against The Killing of Ningthoujam Asha Devi protested in front of the CJM Court Complex from 11 am onwards seeking death penalty for Bigyananda.
As the protestors tried to enter the Court shouting slogans, a heated confrontation took place between them and a police team led by Bishnupur police station OC N Dinesh which also included women personnel stationed at the Court.
Talking to media persons on the side-lines, JAC convener Thokchom Sha-mungou Singh demanded Bigyananda be hanged, authority concerned to take steps to ensure that such incidents do not happen again, filing of chargesheet of the case by the police within two months and punishing the accused as per the law.
Shamungou also said that Bigyananda should not be released from jail after serving some years and should be given stringent punishment.
The agitation was also participated by Apunba Nupi Lup Bishnupur District president L Pramo and advisor L Nganbi Devi, who maintained that the alleged murderer Bigyananda should be hanged or imprisoned for life.
Meanwhile, Bigyananda was produced before the CJM Bishnupur Court on Friday after necessary security measures were put in place.
The Court then remanded the accused to 15 days in judicial custody.
