Imphal, August 13 2021:
Pointing out that names of only 18 martyrs out of 22 exiled martyrs are inscribed along with names of non-exiled martyrs at the newly installed memorial pillar of exiled martyrs of Anglo-Manipuri War 1891 in Imphal, The United Chongthas has urged the government to re-install the memorial plaque containing names of the martyrs with complete and exclusive list of only the exiled martyrs.
In a statement, the body said that 22 brave hearts were exiled to Kalapani after the Anglo-Manipuri War and their detailed records are available in the Administration Report of Manipur, Documentation of Anglo Manipuri War 1891 and other documentations.
These details are also available on the website of Manipur State Archives.
The body has been demanding the government to construct a memorial site for those exiled martyrs for years.
Fortunately, CM Biren acknowledged the importance and agreed to take up necessary initiatives.
Consequently, a seven-member expert committee was formed for identification of location and installation of memorial pillar for the heroes.
Surprisingly, the memorial plaque contains names of only 18 martyrs against the 22 martyrs who were exiled, and there are also names of martyrs who were not exiled.
It then enquired the expert committee the reason for excluding four names and adding non-exiled martyrs' names.
As the memorial pillar was constructed in the name of exiled martyrs, the body appealed to the government to include only the names of the 22 exiled martyrs.
