'Puya Meithaba' to be observed on Oct 8: ACOAM Lup

Informing that October 10 is observed every year as Black day by the ACOAM LUP to commemorate the burning down of scriptures (Puya), the organisation has appealed to all organisations of the state not to call any bandh or blockade on this day.
Addressing the media at a press meet held at its office at Lamphelpat here today, President of ACOAM Lup Ksh.
Somendro said, "on the 17th Day of meitei month 'Mera' (October 10) in 1732 AD during the reign of King Pamheiba, important scriptures of the Meiteis (Puya) were burnt down" .
He further said the date of so called 'Puya Meithaba' is mentioned in Nithor Nath Banerjee's 'Diary of Manipur' (1904), Rajkumar (Bikomsana)Sanahal's 'Manipur Itihas' (1947), Lairenmayum Ibungohal's 'Introduction to Manipur', and Dr.Sunitikumar Chatterjee's 'Kirata Jana Kriti' (1951) .
Records of Puya ablaze have been found in the Royal Chronicle published by Manipur state archives and Pandit Atombapu Sharma's "Pakhangba' also.
Due to the setting ablaze of the precious scriptures, a lot of controversies have emerged in Manipur, he lamented, while appealing to producers of films, dramas and plays to consult with ACOAM Lup before proceeding for any production based on 'Puya Meithaba' incident.
