Imphal, November 06 2009:
Two MLAs of the Manipur People's Party (MPP) have been reportedly distancing themselves from the party and its activities since sometimes back even as the party, the largest opposition party of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, pledged to serve the interest of the people's interest in the House.
Few months back, the MPP President, Dr Nimaichand Luwang had made it public that two of its MLAs were not participating in the activities of the party.
The two MLAs are said to have been continuing to remain aloof from the party and its activities.
A reliable source said the two MPP MLAs who are maintaining aloofness to their party are MPP MLA from Khurai Assembly Constituency, Dr Ng Bijoy and the party MLA from Oinam Assembly Constituency, Dr I Ibohanbi.
The source however refused to disclose whether the party has taken any decision to expel the two 'disobliging' MLAs from the party.
When contacted, an individual close to the two MLAs said, the two MPP MLAs have no opposition to the activities of the party as a regional party and they respect the 'regionalism' of the MPP.
However, the 'corrupted' activities within the party have prevented the two MLAs from entering the party office.
The source further conveyed the desire of the two MLAs to contest the next election in national party tickets in the interest of their political career.
The two MLAs are also said to be hopeful of getting the favour of Ibobi and the Congress.
The two MLAs will remain as MPP MLAs till the end of this term.
The reason behind the refusal of the two MLAs to extend cooperation to the party and the reason for their stand to leave the party could not be confirmed as of now.
A highly reliable source said there has been dissension among the MPP members over the appointment of Dr Nimaichand Luwang as the party president right after the resignation of the former president Dr L Chandramani.
Some members of the MPP were protesting the manner of appointment of Dr Nimaichand Luwang as the party president.
At the same time, observers feel that the existence of internal dissension in the MPP shows that the Congress' ability to easily lay hands in shaking and breaking the unity and integrity of the MPP.
