Out of every 200 persons three are infected with HIV/AIDS in Manipur, according to the Project Director (Technical) of MACS, Dr Kh Pramod Kumar.
During the ongoing three-day training programme on the theme, 'Training for Trainer One Life Education on HIV/AIDS' at R and D Wing, Lamphelpat in Imphal, Dr Pamod Kumar revealed this alarming information.
In the workshop, around 30 delegates representing from all districts of Manipur have been participating which will conclude on Saturday.
Dr Pramod Kumar attributed this bleak situation in the State to the lack of knowledge on HIV/AIDS among the people.
MACS Project Director Pradeep Kumar Jha opined that tackling HIV/AIDS without the cooperation from public is not that easy.
The official urged the participants to seek the public cooperation while taking up measures to control HIV/AIDS.
The population of HIV/AIDS infected persons in the State have crossed 30,000 till March 2009, according to an epidemiological report published by MACS.
The report said that Manipur is a State which has the highest number of HIV/AIDS infected people in the country.
Around 2000 persons are infected with HIV/AIDS every year on the average.
Mention may be made that in the State there is only seven ART centres and around 16,000 persons have registered in the State but only 5000 persons are getting treatment of ART.
Notably, nearly 5000 people have died of AIDS till March this year while more than 2000 children are living with HIV/AIDS in the State, according to NACO.
