Manipur tops in procuring water

With scarcity of water becoming a nightmare for people, Manipur surpassed other states of India in procuring drinking water, said Director of Census Operation Manipur, Y Thamkishore today.
Manipur is also at the top in having radio in every household.
The informations were disclosed by Thamkishore during a One-Day Data Dissemination Workshop on Housing, Household Amenities and Assets, Census 2011 organised by Directorate of Census Operations, Manipur under the Ministry of Home Affairs at Hotel Imphal here today.
At present, 32.1 percent of the total households in Manipur procure drinking water from far places while the remaining households used either tap water, river water or community pond located in their respective villages.
Besides, 54.4 percent of the total households in Manipur have at least a radio in their houses and 10.7 percent of the total households do not have latrine, he said.
He informed that Manipur has 2582 villages and 51 towns including 28 statutory towns and 23 census towns in accordance to 2011 census.
Statutory towns are those towns which, the government recognised and declared as a town while Census towns are places recognised by the Census as a town.
A Census town must have a minimum population of 5000 in 400 square km and occupations of majority of male populations in that area should not be agriculture.
Government officials of concern departments, representatives of NGOs, Research Scholars and many other prominent persons attended the workshop.
Professor I Tomba of Mathematics Department, Manipur University and Dr K Kumarchand of Statistics Department, MU spoke on the occasion as resource persons.
