Imphal, July 06 2012:
As a pre-emptive measure against any possible confrontation between Lunghar and Sihai Khullen villages of Ukhrul district, police have chained 11 buffaloes and taken them into their custody.
A police source informed that some villagers of Lunghar led a herd of buffaloes to paddy fields of neighbouring Sihai Khullen village yesterday morning and let the bovines graze on the paddy plants and devastated the fields.
In retaliation, Sihai villagers caught the buffaloes and kept them in their custody.
On learning about the incident, fearing another violent confrontation between the villages picked up 11 buffaloes which were caught by Sihai villagers.
Notably, three Sihai Khullen villagers were killed on June 30 in a violent confrontation that stemmed from land dispute between the two villages.
Then tragedy struck again on July 1 when three Sihai Khunou villagers were killed after a Shaktiman truck in which they travelling to attend the condolence service of the Sihai Khullen victims met with a road accident.
