Republic Day celebrated amid tight security

Imphal, January 27 2014: Amidst tight security, the State celebrated the 65th Republic Day yesterday.

The main function was held inside Kangia Fort with Governor Vinod Kumar Duggal as chief guest.

A contingent led by 7th Bn Manipur Rifles Assistant Commandant Polem Manjit gave guard of honour to the Governor on his arrival at 8 am at Kangia.

VK Duggal inspected the guard of honour before he unfurled the National tricolour at the saluting base amidst playing of the National anthem by a band party of Manipur Rifles.

Later, the chief guest received salute of 88 different march past contingents led by 6th Bn IRB Commandant Ningthoujam Herojit as parade commander.

Contingents of CRPF, Manipur Rifles, Manipur Police, Manipur Fire Service, ex-servicemen, school and college students and cultural troupes took part at the celebration.

Apart from these contingents, the celebration also witnessed 65 tableaus of different State Government Departments.

Later, Chief Minister Okram Ibobi gave vote of thanks to the participating contingents in a function held at the parade ground of 1st Bn Manipur Rifles.

Speaking at the occasion, the Chief Minister said that India has accomplished advancement in different fields after it got inde-pendenceonAugust 15,1947 .

He added that being a State of India, Manipur has also achieved development in many fields.

In his speech, the Chief Minister mentioned shifting of Assam Rifles from Kangla, construction of Ima Keithel, Assembly and High Court buildings, upgradation of Tulihal Airport to the status of an International airport and ongoing railway project as the achievements of his Government.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, Commissioners, DGP and police and civil dignitaries were present at the occasion.

Earlier, Governor VK Duggal presented medals for meritorious service to the personnel of Manipur Police and Fire Service at the main Republic Day function held at Kangla.

Sub-Officer Babu Singh Kharibam and Leading Fireman Khuman Peter Thangkhul were decorated with Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service.

Manipur Central Jail Warders S Jayanta, W Jin Meitei and SL Haopu were honoured with Correctional Service Medals.

1st Bar to Police Medal for Gallantry recipients were Sub-Inspector P Tarunkumar, S Ibotombi and Hav Nungshibabu while recipients of Police Medal for Gallantary were Sub-Inspector Md Rajib Khan, Sub Inspector M Uttam Singh, Hav Radhakishor Tongbram, Hav M Roshan, Rifleman O Sanjitkumar and Rifleman Kh Herojit.

The Governor presented Police Medal for Meritorious Service to 1 st IRB Commandant N Manimohan, 2nd IRB Commandant L Ibotombi, 4th IRB AC Mangkhojang Kipgen, 6th IRB Subedar Y Indrakumar, MPTC Subedar N Sanatomba, Inspector N Binoy and 7th MR Hav L Nabachandra.

The chief guest also presented President's Fire Service Medal for Meritorious Service to Sub Officer Surchandra Singh Khaidem.

CRPF won first position in the march past competition for uniform contingents while NCC Sr Air Wing was adjudged first position in the NCC groups.

TG Higher Secondary School-A and Standard College got first positions in school and college sections respectively.

In the band party section, MPTC won the top spot while NRHM and Forest I )epartment got the first positions in tableau and gate construction competitions respectively.

First position of the cultural troupe competition went Institute of Cultural Upliftment, Imphal West.
