UCM calls for safeguard of customs

As part of the journey undertaken by United Committee Manipur (UCM) to trace the Manipuris scattered outside the state, aptly named "Eegi Khongul Liba'' (Tracing the Bloodline); the Committee offered respects and floral tributes to the final resting place of freedom fighter Major Chongthamia, located at a distance of 12km from Agartala, Tripura on Sunday.
Speaking in this regard, Joychandra Konthoujam informed that floral tributes were offered to the memorial bust of freedom fighter Major Chongthamia, as part of UCM's "Eegi Khongul Liba".
He then stressed the need for further development of the Chongthamia, along with setting up some sort of security office, proper fencing and a rest house for visitors.
This will help the Manipuri people to recognise and learn more about the freedom fighter, he added.
Joychandra further emphasised the need for the nearby Manipuri residents and Major Chongthamia Memorial Trust to take care of the site, while assuring that UCM will extend all possible assistance in this regard so as to encourage the spirit of preserving the legacy and customs of our forefathers.
UCM general secretary Ngangom Deba stated that Manipuris settling outside are still part of the state, and each of us have the responsibility to uphold our customs and traditions.
He then said that the Committee would be consulting with the government for the welfare of the Manipuris scattered outside the state.
Major Chongthamia Memorial Trust vice president Gurumayum Gourahari Sharma wished for developing the memorial complex and as such, urged the government and UCM to help in this regard.
On the other hand, the UCM team led lauded the efforts of the Lai committee of Ema Lamden Lairembi in Bajalghat, Tripura for organising a Lai Haraoba festival dedicated to the deity and also extended assistance to the Committee.
