Gender equality vital for development: Mirabai

Emphasizing on equal roles of both men and women in the progress and development of the society, Minister for Social Welfare Ak Mirabai has asserted that women must be empowered to make significant contribution in economic development by imparting vocational training and other skill development programmes.
Minister Mirabai was speaking as Chief Guest at the valedictory function of a six-month vocational training course for destitute women and girls held at Welfare Training Institute, Takyelpat here today.
She further said that the Welfare Training Institute, previously known as Rural Training Institute, has been imparting vocational training to 60 women every year since its establishment in 1982 .
The Social Welfare Minister also advised the trainees to make optimum use of their knowledge and machines supplied by the government in generating regular income for their families.
Mirabai further lauded the commendable achievement of differently-abled Pukhrambam Julia in Higher Secondary Examination-2013, and assured her of all possible assistances from the Social Welfare Department.
She also announced that the vacant posts for Braille Press under Government Blind School would be filled up soon and a Commissioner for Handicapped would be appointed by June 10 .
Director of Social Welfare Department Th Chitra said that the trainees should sincerely work to achieve economic sustenance by putting all their knowledge and experience gained from the six-month training.
The valedictory function was also attended by Principal Secretary of Social Welfare Barun Mitra and Joint Secretary of Social Welfare H Rupachandra.
Later, certificates and awards were distributed to the trainees by the distinguished guests.
