Imphal, December 19 2019:
With regard to the food served to school children, Food Safety and Standards (Safe Foods and Healthy Diet for School Children) Regulations 2019 would be enforced in the State soon.
This was stated by Education Minister Th Radheshyam in response to a motion raised in public interest by P Brojen in the State Assembly today.
Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 is already in most parts of the country.
As such, there is no need for enactment of any separate Act or law.
There is also a body called the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI).
It was FSSAI which formulated the Food Safety and Standards (Safe Foods and Healthy Diet for School Children) Regulations 2019, Radheshyam informed the House.
The Government has been awaiting public opinions on the regulations before they are implemented.
The regulations would apply to children staying in boardings of both private and Government schools, as well as children staying at home.
The true asset of any Nation is the children.
So it is everybody's responsibility to ensure wellbeing of all children, Radheshyam said.
Earlier, raising the motion, P Brojen pointed out that a large number of children staying in different boardings are being served unhygienic and unsafe foods.
He also sought attention of the Government towards mushrooming of boardings for school children at different parts of the State.
