Bishnupur, December 19 2019:
Claiming that the unfortunate incident in which a newborn baby girl of H Abung Singh and Haobijam (o) Roshini (22) died just after delivery in the Loktak Lake was due to the obstruction caused by the floating phumdis (biomass) on their way to a hospital, Pradhan of Thanga Part-I, O Romen appealed all concerned to lift the ban imposed on clearing such phumdis from the lake.
Speaking to media persons during a press meet organised by Karang Island Development Organization (KIDO), today, the Pradhan said that waterway that connects Kumbi with other town is mostly covered by the phumdis.
As the phumdis obstruct the waterway, the child was delivered in the lake and as proper care was not given to the newborn, the child, ultimately died, he claimed.
He also appealed all concerned to ensure that Karang PHC is operated seven days a week and post requisite doctors and nurses to ensure that timely healthcare facilities are given to those in need.
Former president of KIDO and general secretary (Adm) of MPP, H Gitanjen said that Karang Island under Thanga Assembly Constituency of Bishnupur District, which was announced as the first cashless island of India, apart from not have no proper road and other essential facilities, apart from not getting access to a potable water.
Saying that the roads that connect Thanga and Karang, as well as Karang and Mayang Imphal, are in deplorable conditions, he opined that the State Government, if willing, can repair the roads to some extent by depositing the phumdis collected from other parts of the Loktak Lake in the road stretches.
Repairing work of Mayang Imphal-Karang road was started by a company called K-Pro, however, the project was stopped sans completion, he said, urging the authority to look into the matter and complete the project at the earliest.
If the State Government continued to turn deaf ear to the grievance of Karang, the locals of the island will form a JAC and start agitating, he cautioned.
The press meet was also attended by MO of Karang PHC Dr Johnson Moirangthem and several members of KIDO and locals of Karang.
On the other hand, it is reported that Roshni, who is the mother of the deceased baby girl, is out of danger.
