Chandel, August 25 2014:
Chandel Naga People's Organisation in a memorandum submitted to the Governor of Manipur has urged for inclusion of Chandel Block under NERCORMP-II and for recruitment of local NGOs for partnering in the implementation of the project in the district.
A copy of the memorandum which was made available to media today stated, 'We are happy that NERCORMP-III is extended to Chandel district but many communities including small Tribes are being left out of the project while selecting the blocks to be benefited' .
The memorandum stated that 2 blocks out of six i.e., Tengnoupal and Machi have been selected for National Rural Livelihood Mission while 3 blocks namely Chakpikarong, Khengjoy and Moreh have been included for NERCORMP III project but Chandel Block is neither covered by NRLM nor NERCORMP.
Demanding the inclusion of Chandel Block under NERCORMP-III the memorandum stated that the Chandel lock is comparatively lower in terms of economy and it is purely up land (hills) areas inhabited by largest numbers of tribes than any other blocks in the district.
Though it is a district head quarters, it has a vast tract of remote areas stretching upto Myanmar border.
Contending that selecting Moreh block which is an urban town with more international trade facility generating huge revenues with available better livelihood opportunities as 'unfair', the memorandum further urged the Governor to intervene in the matter and include Chandel, a home of many indigenous small tribes like Taro, Moyon, Monsang, Chpothe, Lamkang Anal, Kiom, Maring and Tangkhul under the NERCORMP-III.
The memorandum jointly signed by Tribe Presidents of Anal , Lamkang, Monsang and President of CNPO, NSUC and NWUC further asked the Governor to intervene in the selection of the local NGOs as NERCORMP partners saying that local NGOs have better understanding of the socio-economic, culture and political situation of the local people.
