Imphal, August 25 2014:
Department of Political Science, Modern College organised a one-day deliberation session on the topic, 'Geopolitics of climate change and south Asia: Discourses of fear and cartographic anxieties' at the college today.
Speaking on the topic, Director, Centre for the Study of Mid West and Central Asia and Coordinator, UGC SAP, Department of Political Science, Panjab University, Prof Sanjay Chaturvedi said that there is need to rage a war against global warming because if terrorism can kill 100 people, global warming is capable to take the lives of thousand people.
As such, climate change posed a serious threat to human civilization, worse than terrorism, he added.
That is why, people all over the world must seriously ponder on the issue of global warming as this menace has the potential to even pulverise this planet, he cautioned.
He said that the undifferentiated mass of humanity is imaginatively framed as a integral to 'global soul' and cast within the shadow of a global enemy - climate - which is said to affect all (with the poor and the marginalised as the worst victims) but only can be interpreted and understood by a scientific and economic elite.
He said one of the most alarmist, ways in which climate change is folded into a discourse of fear (that in turn requires a geopolitical response) in support of various domestic and foreign policy agendas both within Bangladesh and its immediate neighbourhood in India, is by referencing the 'problem' of millions of 'climate migrants' and 'climate refugees.' The geopolitics of climate change in South Asia will continue to oscillate between various imaginative geographies of fear and counter-imaginative geographies of hope, depending upon their ideological moorings and power-political agendas, he said.
Department of Political Science, Modern College, Head of Department Dr R Horam told reporters that it is high time to deliberate the issue of global warming and take up necessary measures to check it.
He also thanked Prof Sanjay Chaturvedi for expressing his views on the topic at today's deliberation session.
Prof Chaturvedi also interacted with students on the topic.
Modern College Principal Dr K Biren also spoke at the session.
