A havildar of 6th Manipur Rifles attached with the Imphal west police commandos has been placed under suspension from his service in connection with assault of a college lecturer on March 13 during Yaosang festival.
O Ajit from Khagempali Nganapi Thong, lecturer of DM college science, was rounded up by a team of Imphal west police commandos on Friday (March 13) afternoon while he was taking part in the local sports meet being held at Yaosang festival and was released after being assaulted seriously.
Ajit was taken to Shija Hospital, Imphal in a serious condition.
Outraged over the incident, locals of Khagempali blocked the main road passing through the locality and burnt down tyres and debris to block the traffic.
Locals of Khagempali in Imphal were up in arms against the assault on college lecturer with a demand of placing havildar, M Vivekananda who led the commando team that assaulted the lecturer from his service.
The protest was suspended after after circle MLA and state education minister, L Jayentakumar assured of appropriate action against the erring police personnel.
Later, on March 14, state DGP issued an order placing M Vivekananda under suspension from his service.
Before placing him under suspension, he was detached from the Imphal west police commando unit, official source said.
