AR recovers contraband items, cigarettes worth crores

Imphal, September 01 2020:
Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) recovered 58 packets of WY tablets (each packet containing 10,000 tablets), 170 packets of illegal foreign cigarettes (WIN) worth approximately Rs 17.5 crores smuggled from Myanmar.
On receiving specific information regarding movement of vehicles carrying some illegal items at Khemdo area, a mobile vehicle check post was established at Khemdo August 31.Troops deployed at the MVCP stopped a Maruti Gypsy and a Suzuki Access (two wheeler) and carried out a detailed check of the vehicles which were coming from New Songyang.
On checking, 58 packets of WY tablets and 170 packets of WIN cigarettes worth approx Rs 17.5 crores were found, said a statement of PRO IGAR (South) .
The troops also arrested two identified as John Thangjalet Haokip, a resident of Saibol Joupi, Chandel district and Vickey Haokip, a resident of Khangbarol, Chandel district.
The seized items and the two persons have been handed over to Chandel Police Station, said AR .
