Ukhrul, September 24 2013:
A serious confusion prevailed in Ukhrul town on day one of the 48-hour total bandh called by Tangkhul Aze Katamnao Long (TAKL) to protest the murder of Jonathan Kashung amidst opposition by Tangkhul frontal organisations.
In Ukhrul town on Monday, the bandh had mixed response as almost all business establishments down their shutters and government offices registered low attendance.
In spite of the publicity drive by the TFOs to ignore the bandh call, a majority of the townsmen preferred to shut down their activities.
Educational institutions and shops remained closed in Hungpung areas, which is under the jurisdiction of Thawaichau Hungpung Youth Student Organisation (THYSO).
However, the bandh was later called off following an understanding with the TFOs.
TAKL volunteers were reportedly deployed at Litan and Yaingangpokpi areas to enforce the bandh along the Imphal-Ukhrul road.
On day one, public transporters and other vehicles stayed off the road, while taxis to various destinations within the district also stopped their service.
It was informed that the TFOs were consulted by the TAKL in regard to the matter, which was prompted by the muder of Jonathan, a TNL presidential candidate, who also hailed from Southern Tangkhul region.
