Imphal, September 24 2013:
Admitting that attacks on press and journalists in the country have gone up every day, the Press Council of India (PCI) has assured to look into the problem faced by scribes in Manipur.
A six-member delegation of PCI led by its convenor Kosuri Amarnath arrived in Imphal on Tuesday in a maiden visit to the state.
"Attacks on press and journalists considered to be the fourth estate have gone up day by day in India.
A PCI 10-Member Sub-Committee was set up on September 9, 2011 to directly look into all the problems faced by journalists in the country," Amarnath told reporters at Imphal Tulihal Airport.
He said during the 2-day visit to Manipur the PCI team will find out all the problems confronting the state journalists and collect the report and then impress upon the Chief Minister and other competent authorities to take steps to provide security protection to the scribes.
"We'll put the findings from all the states before the PCI which will in turn urge the Parliament to safeguard the freedom of press," he informed.
He said the delegation had already visited Assam, Meghalaya and Tripura on the same purpose and informed that it would tour more states in North East.
The PCI team was received at the airport in the afternoon by a media team, including Wangkhemcha Shyamjai, president, All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and officials of Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).
It would attend a big conference here tomorrow to meet the state scribe and then hold consultations with Chief Minister O Ibobi, state police DGP, Secretary, Director, DIPR and other officials on September 26 .
PCI 10-Member Sub-Committee members Kalyan Barooah, Arvind S Tengre, Arun Kumar, and two official staff members of PCI Bhim Singh and Naveen Joshy are among the visiting team.
