Calls for concerted and collective campaign to check trafficking of women and girl child and domestic violence against women were among a wide range of issues that dominated the opening day of the two-day 4th Manipur State Conference of AMDWA (All manipur Democratic Women's Association) inaugurated today at Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel.
AMDWA is an affiliate of All India Democratic Women's Association, New Delhi.
presenting the presidential address, AMDWA president Y Romola Devi expressing strong resentment on increasing cases of atrocities against women and their deprivation in various aspects stressed on sustaining campaigns to curb all forms of violence against women.
Stating that social reformation, particularly prevention of violence against women, could begin at home, Romola said mothers need to drive home the point to their children that rights of the women deserve protection from every section of the society.
Not only the girl child but the boys too need to be constantly reminded that respecting rights of the women is one of the most important criteria to a society to achieve all-round progress, said the event host president elaborating on her assertion that homely education is the most effective means to ensure a conducive environment for the girl child and women to prosper.
She also highlighted that the conference will focus on prevention of unborn girl child infanticide, mandatory education of the girl child, commensurate wage for female manual workers, intensifying campaigns to check atrocities or outraging modesty of women caught in conflict situation, curb dowry, penalise security force personnel convicted in cases related to violence/rape of women and adequate compensate to the victims, ensure matrimonial/property rights of married women, proper rehabilitation of HIV/AIDS affected women victims and 33 percent seat reservation for women in the Parliament and State assemblies.
As a guest of honour, Manipur State Archives director W Sushila Devi, soliciting effort and contributions of all the NGOs in upholding rights of the women exhorted Manipuri womenfolk to strive for excelling in their respective fields along with reminding them that Manipuri women took the leading role in the historic Nupilans.
Apart from the historic events it is praiseworthy that present-day Manipuri women and girls continue to excel in diverse fields, including enviable achievements in sports, said the Director who also opined that advent of mobile phones has added to instances of various incidents of indecency against girls/women.
Among others the conference inauguration programme was attended by JN Manipur Dance Academy Guru Nalini Devi, All Manipur Bar Association vice president advocate L Kiranbala Devi, AIDWA treasurer Barnali Biswas, AIDWA assistant secretary Krishna Rikshit and AIDWA secretariat member Anwara Mirza.
