Imphal, April 07 2013 :
One non commissioned officer and a Rifleman have been killed while another Rifleman sustained injuries when two groups of Assam Rifles personnel exchanged fire due to a misunderstanding and mistaken identity at Lokchao along the Imphal-Moreh route last night.
Troops of 9 AR and 24 AR engaged in a gun fight at Lokchao along NH 2 about 20 Kms from Moreh at about 9 pm yesterday due to some communication gap, informed a source.
24 AR Warrant Officer Ram Krishna Singh (50) from Uttaranchal and Rifleman Narengbam Sureshkumar (30) of Wangjing Sorokhaibam Leikai, Thoubal district were killed in the gun fight.
On the side of 9 AR, Rifleman Pankaj Kumar from Bihar sustained injuries and he is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS.
He sustained bullet injuries on the abdomen, legs and hands.
Lokchao is within the operational area of 24th AR D-Coy.
However, troops of 9th AR acting on intelligence report about presence of UG cadres in the area were lying in ambush.
On receiving the same information, troops of 24th AR moved into the area on foot.
With both the parties unable to see each other clearly coupled with a communication regarding their operations, the two groups engaged each other in a gun fight, said the source.
Corpses of the two slain AR personnel have been brought to JNIMS morgue.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered in Moreh police station in connection with the incident.
