Imphal, October 27 2014:
Even as campaigns are being held in the State as part of the ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission which aims to eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets in every household by 2019, the mission has not reached Tongou village under Chingai Constituency in Ukhrul district till yet, prompting its villagers to question about areas covered by the mission in the State.
The Tongou village inhabited by Tangkhul tribe is located around 60 kms drive from Imphal and 30 kms away from Mahadeva Lamkhai is deprived of basic amenities.
In a tete-e-tete with Hueiyen Lanpao, Atem A Simrai, headman of Tongou village lamented that the village is lagging behind in very aspects as compared to other villages and urged the authorities concerned to set up a market shed in the village to facilitate its villagers at the earliest.
He conceded that the village is a potential area for conducting business as it has been producing vegetables and fruits abundantly but due to the absence of market in the village, the vegetable products produced in the village in large quantity rendered useless.
Exuding confidence that livelihood of Tongou villagers who are mostly farmers by profession will be enhanced considerably if there is a market shed in the village, he maintained that implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission would prove very much helpful in the village as cleanliness is also a major concern for the village.
He then appealed to the concerned authorities to come up with campaign for implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission and set up a market shed in the village at the earliest possible.
