Following the resignation of Dr L Chandramani from MPP presidentship, Dr Nimaichand Luwang has been appointed to the vacant post by the party's central committee.
Addressing a press meet at the party's office this af ternoon, outgoing president Dr Chandramani said that his resignation was the first step towards strengthening the MPP so that it can fight the 2012 Assembly elections successfully.
To bring a new Manipur of peace and stability, differ ent from the present Manipur characterised by daily vio lence, is the objective of the MPP, he said.
The Assembly elections of 2012 is the target for MPP to deliver its objective to the people.
"To ensure success of the party in the next Assembly elections, I resigned from the party presidentship on my own, without any influence from others, so that a younger and more energetic leader can guide the party", Dr Chandramani said.
Saying the term of the par ty's president, according to MPP constituency is three years, MPP Legislature Wing leader O Joy said that, one month is left before the expiry of Dr Chandramani's.term.
Even though Dr Chandra mani's tenure is yet to mature, he resigned on his own with a view to bring a change in the or ganisational set-up of the party in order to strengthen the party, Joy noted.
He said that Dr Nimai chand has been appointed president by the party's central committee.
An advisory team to the new president has also been selected.
Dr Chandramani, former Union Minister Th Chaoba and O Joy are mem bers of the team.
Newly appointed Dr Nimaichand Luwang high lighted desire to bring a Manipur of peace and sta bility in place of the present one marred by continuous violent incidents.
He also condemned the acts of vio lence, extortion and killing on non-local people.
Saying that he would chart out his tasks under collective wisdom of the party, Dr Nimaichand pledged that he would devote four days of the six working days in a week to field works.
He claimed that he would make MPP a party trusted by the people.
Pointing out there was a glaring contradiction be tween the Government's version and report given by eye-witnesses about the BT Road incident, Dr Nimai chand demanded an enquiry into the incident either by a House committee or an independent body.
Asserting that the people find are disillusioned with the measures taken up by the Govt to tackle the drought-like situation, Dr Nimaichand alleged that there has been political in terference at every level starting from distribution of water pump sets.
