Cachar, July 26 2009:
United Development Organisation organised a public discussion on Tipaimukh Dam at Ganga Dayal Dixit Community Hall here today.
Coordinator of Citizens Concern for Dams and De velopment, W Ramanand, Society, active member of Volunteers and Environ ment, Jishnu Dim a.secretary of Alliance Against Suban siri Project Dhemaji, Keshab Krishna Chatradhara, and ac tive member of Committee on Land and Natural Re sources, Kinderson Pamei were seated on the dais dur ing the discussion.
Around 100 public lead ers took part in the discussion.
Speaking in the discus sion, Co-convenor of Action Committee Against Tipai mukh Project, O Bikramjit cited the remarks made by a former Chief Secretary and some Ministers of Manipur on the'issue of Tipaimukh dam that the people of Manipur have nothing to lose but the people of Cachar who are settled in the down stream.
The anti-dam activists were also urged not to raise a hue and cry, he added.
Bikramjit said that such remarks made by a former Chief Secretary and Minis ters of Manipur were unexpected and unfortunate.
Taking part in the discussion, W Ramanand asserted that as the entire North East is prone to earthquake, the dam may be shattered at any time.
If it happens, the entire Lakhimpur sub-division of Cachar district will be under 10-metre water and Silchar town under seven-metre water - p4 Exhorting the gathering to oppose the dam, he said that the people will gain nothing from the dam but displeacement and distruction.
The discussion concluded with a resolution to oppose the construction of Tipaimukh dam at any cost.
