Two persons, including an IRB jawan, were severely beaten up by an angry crowd after they tried to flee after allegedly snatching gold ear rings from a woman on Saturday.
The incident happened at about 5:30 pm at the crowded Nagamapal traffic island near Khwairamband market.
The duo involved in the incident were identified as Chanabam Karnajit (34), a jawan belonging to 8th IRB who hails from Uripok Polem Leikai in Imphal West, presently attached to Commando Complex, and the accomplice Chonga Koireng (39) who is a resident of Thangmeiband Hijam Leikai, also in Imphal West.

Koireng confessed to the crime saying he snatched the gold ear rings from the woman.
Witnesses said the woman shouted as her ear rings were snatched by the fleeing duo.
The bystanders gave a chase and overpowered them near Nityananda corner on RIMS road.
But they told the crowd that the gold ear rings had been thrown into a drain nearby which angered the crowd more.
They were then severely thrashed by the crowd inflicting injuries.
The duo was later handed over to the police who took them away to RIMS for treatment.
But the identity of the woman was unknown.
She was also taken to RIMS for treatment as she suffered minor injuries in the incident.
