Imphal, April 17 2023:
Expressing dissent over not assigning any responsibility as a chairman, BJP MLA Karam Shyam of Langthabal AC has tendered his resignation from the chairmanship of Tourism Corporation of Manipur Limited on Monday.
In a video clip shared on social media, MLA Shyam also contended that he was sidelined/ignored in many programmes of the state government of which he was involved.
The MLA stated that being a leader, we need to have a sacrificial spirit without which he/she will cease to be a leader in the real sense of the term.
Moreover, a leader has to be committed and stick to his words, failing which the people will lose trust in his/her leadership.
He further stated that most of the MLAs have come out successful after fighting fierce battles in the election.
However, as an MLA, he has not been allotted any funds related with the development works of his constituency for the financial years 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23.As a result, his image as the MLA has been blotted in the eyes of his people.
In connection with the development works related with tourism, Karam Shyam said that no positive response was given to his proposal of taking up renovation work of Maharaja Gambhir Singh complex, which the chief minister promised and announced even in the media, and as such he did not participate in the death anniversary function of Maharaja Gambhir on January 9 last.
Being the chairman of a public undertaking/corporation, he did not have the privilege of questioning in the state assembly and also has no right to bring up issues of his constituency and hence remained as a silent spectator during discussions in the house, the MLA maintained and added that he was not enthusiastic about accepting the post of chairman when first offered but was compelled to take it after Lamsang MLA insisted him and even brought the appointment order for him.
He also alleged that he had not been consulted in carrying out any of the events of the Sangai Festival which were held at 14 different locations.
Despite being the chairman, he was not given the opportunity of providing a single stall in his discretion.
" During the time when the state was gearing up for the Sangai festival, I could hardly do anything and remained a useless chairman," he rued.
Shyam further informed that he was sidelined in the management of funds amounting to over crores of rupees in organising the Sangai festival.
When a proposal for sanctioning Rs 4 lakh, out of the total Rs 7 lakh spent on organising the cycle rally as part of the Sangai festival was sent, it was flatly denied.
He was also denied from delivering speech during the Sangai Festival, which is very unfortunate.
Therefore, he perceives that chairmanship without power or assignment is an insult to him and hence considered it best to dissociated from the Corporation, said Karam Shyam, who had been a cabinet minister in the first term of the Biren Singh government (2017-2021) .
It is worth mentioning that the development comes a few days after Heirok BJP MLA Thokchom Radheshyam tendered resignation from the post of advisor to the chief minister for not being assigned any responsibility.
