Scanty rain hits Chandel, farmers in trouble

Chandel, August 20 2014:
'The state government must extend all possible help to ensure that farmers get the normal agricultural harvest in the wake of the drought like situation prevailing in the western part of Chandel district due to deficit rainfall', BJP Kisan Morcha, Chandel District stated.
President of the BJP's Kisan Morcha Chandel district Headquarters Joseph made this statement while briefing media persons after a team of the Morcha visited the affected fields and interactions with the farmers and area chiefs.
Conveying the grievances faced by the farmers, HB Joseph informed that around 95 hectares of field land spread across about 20 villages under Chandel and Chakpikarong blocks have been affected by scanty rainfall.

He pointed out that more than 150 farmers have been affected.
But the figure might be more as the team could not reach all the villages due to constraint of time.
The team visited Purum Tampak, Litan, Chandropoto, Lainingkhul, Purum Pantha, Lainingkhul, Purum Khullen Tonsen Tampak and Tonsen Khullen.
Talking to media, Assistant Chief of Purum Tampak and Chandropoto villages MK Hazari Chothe said the deficit rainfall in the area has left many of the fields dry making it impossible to do paddy transplantation.
He appealed to the Government for extending all possible help to the affected farmers.
At Khumhring village, the Chairman of the Joint Action Committee Western Chandel Kl Kanthu Anal reported to the team that similar situation is prevailing in villages of Unopat, Julbangching, Tokpaching, Thungcheng, Khambathel, Khumhring, Ngamkhu, Maribung and a few villages under Gunpi area.
While visiting Toupokpi village, Village Chief HL Beshel told the BJP team that about 30 hectares of paddy fields belonging to 57 farmers have been severely affected.
The Vice President of BJP Chandel district Ts Konal, Vice President of BJP Kisan Morcha Chandel district Kh Thamtit Lamkang and social activist Ts Ismael were also part of the inspection team.
