Bamboo industry will spur development; provide employment: Govindas

Development of bamboo industry in Manipur will help in generating employment and spur economic growth in the State, said Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam on Thursday.
The minister stated this during the inauguration of the International Bamboo Conference cum Workshop at Oriental College campus, Takyel, organised by Oriental College, Salai Holdings Pvt Ltd, Bamboo Forum of India and Dev Bamboo Industries.
The conference will continue for five days.
Attending the function as Chief Guest, Govindas highlighted the potential for bamboo industry in Manipur.
He said bamboos grow faster than tress and stressed on the importance of promoting bamboo industry.
Manipur is well known in the field of sports but bamboo handloom and handicrafts can also contribute to the State's overall identity, said Govindas.
He suggested that efforts are needed to establish bamboo industry hubs as the State owns vast tracts of land for its development.
Attending the function as President, Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister AK Mirabai said that bamboo is associated with the people of Manipur from birth to death.
Bamboo occupies an important place in Manipur society, she emphasized.
The function was also attended by former Manipur University Chancellor Prof H Tombi and Oriental College Principal Th Biren.
Three delegates namely Thoop Nakasen (Thailand), Niramit Sareerudt (Thailand) and Pulok Mandal (Thailand) participated in the International Bamboo Conference cum Workshop as resource persons.
A souvenir was also released in connection with the conference.
