Imphal, March 13 2013:
Following the assurance given by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh to find out the owners of the drugs seized in the State and award befitting punishment, Working Group of Meira Paibis Movement in Manipur has temporarily suspended its stir.
Announcing this during as press conference at Manipur Press Club here today, Convener of the Group L Memchoubi said that Indian security forces have been oppressing the people of the state in the name of counter insurgency operations.
They have been committing various crimes like extrajudicial killing, rape, torture, force disappearance, etc with immunity assured under AFSPA.
After more than 50 years of oppression, Indian army has resorted to trafficking drugs in the state to weaken the power of Manipuri youths.
The seizure of a large consignment of drugs from the PRO of PIB (DW) on February 24 at Pallel was a solid example Indian army adopting drug warfare tactics in the state.
Besides, the arrest of Seikholal Haokip, one of the sons of MLA TN Haokip along with four bags of drugs also proves that politicians, public representatives and many high profile individuals are involved in drug smuggling, Memchoubi alleged.
She went on to say that apart from the drugs seized from the Army Colonel at Pallel, police have seized huge quantities of drugs from different parts of the state in recent time.
But, surprisingly, the government has not been unable to find out the owners of the drugs seized.
So, now the question that is ringing in the mind of people is how such large consignments of drugs could got trafficked despite close surveillance of numerous check posts along the National Highways and the security checking at the airports.
Taking the matter seriously, Meira Paibis tried to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister during the Assembly session.
However, the attempt was foiled by police.
Later, Meira Paibis thronged at the CM's bungalow on March 11 and submitted the memorandum.
After that, representatives of Meira Paibis held a meeting with the Chief Minister at his office during which the Chief Minister assured to find out the owners of the drugs and award befitting punishments at the earliest.
Consequently, the Meira paibis have decided to suspend their stir temporarily.
