Imphal, February 01 2021:
North East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) demanded increasing the number of State-run buses and other public transports and keeping a check on hike in fare by privately owned transport service providers.
NEFIS demanded this in a memorandum submitted today to the Chief Minister regarding the private bus operators having monopoly and without restrictions due to the pathetic condition of the public transport system in Manipur, said a statement issued by the forum today.
Private bus operators take advantage of lack of adequate number of State run buses and charge hefty fare and the phenomenon of unchecked rise in bus fare has been going on in the State for quite a long time now, added the statement.
Above this, the excessively high fare charged by small public transport vehicles such as diesel autorickshaws, Tata Magic, Winger etc which are more than often used for intra-district commute has taken a toll on students and other daily commuters, added the statement.
As they are not regulated by any Government agencies, there is an increasing need for new regulations to be brought in so that such excruciating demand of high fare can be put under check, added the statement.
NEFIS also demanded special public buses for women to ensure safe travel of women and issuing of concessional passes for students, women and workers for State and privately run transports, added the statement.
