Special Handloom Expo kicks off

Mahud Minister Okram Henry inaugurated the Special Handloom Expo at Urban Haat at Nilakuthi in Imhal East today.
The 14 day long expo is organised by Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans CS Limited under the aegis of National Handloom Development Program (NHDP).
The inaugural event was attended by Md Asabuddin MLA of Jiribam A/C, Gurumayum Shanti Devi National awardee, M Ibohal Singh Assistant Director of Weavers Service Centre Porompat, Y Shantikumar officer in charge of NHDC Ltd and K Indira Devi president of Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicraft Artisans C S Ltd as the presidium members.
Speaking as the chief guest O Henry said that there were limited buyers in the past for the handloom products.
However with the opening of various showrooms and outlets under the guidance of the Government led by Chief Minister N Biren, now there are many potential buyers for the handloom products in the State.
He continued that handloom expos provide a platform for the handloom and handicraft products of the State and appealed to all to promote the local made products.
He also assured that the Department will extend all possible help for the said cause.
MLA Md Asabuddin requested the Minister to open a branch in Jiribam and stated that he will provide free land and will sponsor all the cost for construction of the branch.
He also stressed on the need to conduct awareness programmes among the weavers in order to enhance productivity.
