Addressing the gathering, Naresh said that the people of Manipur have been oppressed under the British Rule since 1891 and again under the Indian government since October 15, 1949 .
The people have faced lots of hardship at the hands of imperial powers.
The gruesome incident of May 28, 1979 had shown the brutality of the State force which has been put into action to suppress the people, he asserted.
Naresh recalled the incident saying that the students had just raised their voice for the betterment of their school, but the government did not heed to their words even after one student Haobijam Ibohal from Ningthoujam was killed in police firing during the course of agitations.
In the follow up agitations, students even held hunger strike to press their demands.
However, instead of fulfilling the demands, two agitating students Khelen and Sarat were killed in the custody of the then OC of Moirang PS Ibohal, he added.
AMSU has been observing this day as the Protection Day for Students' Rights every year.
