Imphal, February 17 2012:
The Janata Dal-United (JD-U), Manipur Sate unit has alleged that large scale proxy voting in Saitu Assembly constituency of Senapati district during the recent elections to the State Assembly.
Addressing a press conference at its office at Paona Bazar here today, President of JD-U Manipur State Unit M Tombi asserted that in the said Assembly Constituency electors resorted to large scale double and triple voting apart from casting votes against the names of voters who are more.
M Tombi said that indulgence in bogus voting on a large scale is a clear indication of election officials doing table work only and seldom going out in the field in connection with preparation of Electoral Rolls Revision.
Such dereliction of duty on the part of election officials is condemnable and the Election Commission of India (ECI) as well as the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) should take up necessary action against the polling officers concerned.
Otherwise, JD (U) would take the help of law.
He pointed out that in eight polling stations under Saitu Assembly Constituency, some of the voters cast votes three to four times.
For instance, in Pangmol-B 51/22 (N.Songlung), one elector, namely Khaikam, who is in serial no.1 in the Electoral Rolls, also cast the votes of Letkhongam and Kaikam, who are in serial no.177 and 181 respectively.
Len Gangte, General Secretary, Manipur State JD (U), who was also present during the press conference, asserted that the CEO office is full of corruption.
Len said that his party welcomed the ECI decision of conducting re-poll in various polling booths where the polling norms have been violated and appealed to the election authorities for proper conduct of screening of voters before polling.
