Cargo Terminal to come up at Imphal Airport

The Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India has given its approval for setting up a Cargo Terminal at Imphal Airport so as to accelerate the growth of trade through airways and develop the economy of the State.
According to a reliable source, the Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur would be taking up the responsibility of constructing the Cargo Terminal for which the Ministry of Commerce and Industries has approved sanctioning of Rs 10 crores.
To start the construction process, the required land has to be registered under the name of the Department.
To be constructed under the name of Export-Import Cargo Terminal, the terminal would have two cold storage rooms as well.
The terminal would not only serve as import point of goods from outside but will also as a platform for exporting local made goods outside the State, the source disclosed.
The source further revealed that since the patta of Imphal Airport is presently under the name of Airport Authority of India.
The process of transferring some land area under the name of Department of Commerce and Industries has already been completed.
An area of around 3,900 sq metre has been transferred in the name of the Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Manipur.
The understanding over the transfer of land to the Department of Commerce and Industries has been brought about only after it was agreed that though the construction process for the Cargo Terminal is given to the Department of Commerce and Industries, the use of the terminal should be the right of the Airport Authority of India and that the Department of Commerce and Industries should not be allowed to give away the power of maintenance of the terminal to any other third party, the source said.
The North East Commissioner, Airport Authority of India has been assigned to make a project report in this connection and a Detailed Project Report is to be submitted to the Ministry of Commerce and Industries after which the construction process of the terminal would be started, the source added.
