NPF, ADC Ukhrul visit affected Mapithel area

A joint team of Naga Peoples Front (NPF) Ukhrul Division and the newly formed Autonomous District Council (ADC) Ukhrul visited the Mapithel Dam affected villages on Tuesday to physically take stock of the situation in the wake of the ingressing dam water fast engulfing the area submerging dwelling houses, paddy fields and forests.
The team toured the affected area covering Thoyee, Riha, Ramrei, Louphong and finally halted at Chadong village where a meeting with the villagers was held at the village community hall.
Addressing the gathering, NPF Ukhrul Vice President R Ramyo said that the affected area is abound with natural resources and agricultural produces but it has been perished now due to the arbitrary construction of dam.

He further asserted that Mapithel area falls under Phungyar constituency, while charging that the concerned MLA has till date remained a mute spectator to all the sufferings of the affected villagers in his constituency.
Accusing the State Government of wheeling and dealing in the dam project, Ramyo said that apart from Mapithel area even a large chunks of catchment area of Teinem- Phalee in Western and that of Khangkhui-Nungshong in northern Ukhrul are to be affected by dam water but all these years the government was keeping ignorant inhabitants in the dark about all these.
Strongly condemning the alleged indifferent attitude of the government, he called upon political parties, social leaders to unitedly pursue justice for the hapless inhabitants.
Ukhrul ADC chairman Dr Yaronsho Ngalung assured to render every possible assistance to the affected villagers once the new council assumes office.
Meanwhile, as level of the ingressing water rising unabated submerging a growing number of dwelling houses of Chadong, villagers were seen dismantling their standing shelters on a war footing.
The trouble torn villagers have demanded that in the absence of the government failing to provide them rehabilitation and resettlement package, the trapped dam water wreaking havoc on them must be immediately released.
Chadong chieftain Wungnaoyo informed pressmen that the water level is growing by two feet in a day, adding it rises as much as up to 5 feet during recent rainy days.
