MLA of Naoriya Pakhanglakpa assembly constituency, RK Anand has distributed Indira Gandhi National Old Age Pension to the aged persons of the constituency today.
A simple function for distribution of pensions was held at the residence of the MLA at Kwakeithel Akham Leikai.
MLA Anand gave an amount of Rs 2800 to each of 300 old persons who have no means of income.
The monthly pension is about Rs 200 in average.
Officials of Social Welfare Department, Government of Manipur were also present at the distribution function.
Speaking on the occason, the MLA stated that since it was the first time that old age pensions were distributed in the constituency, the programme was launched at his home.
In future, the pensioners can go to the office concerned and collect their pensions themselves.
If the pensioners find no conveyance to go to the office, he may be informed of it, and he will arrange to take the aged pensioners to the office, he said.
He further said that there are many more old persons who deserve to get old age pension.
However, since the number is limited to only 300, local committees along with the pradhans scrutinised the list of the aged persons and selected those persons whose family income was the lowest.
He will try to give pensions to the rest of the aged persons in the constituency and also assured that the earlier discrepancies in granting old age pensions will be corrected.
