Imphal, November 22 2013 :
Condemning the highhandedness of the officials of State Tourism Department, the councillors of Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) have boycotted the ongoing Sangai Festival at Hapta Kangjeibung here.
Addressing media persons in this regard at the office of IMC here today, Chairperson of Public Health and Sanitary Committee Ksh Umesh said that the Principal Secretary and Director of Tourism Department have intimated the IMC to take charge of maintaining cleanliness in and around the festival venue.
Thereafter, the councillors convened a meeting and formed a seven-member festival management committee with Chairperson of IMC A Nimai Sharma as its chairman on November 13 .
The IMC has started to take up cleanliness work for Sangai Festival by deploying two dumper pressure trucks, one Tata Magic vehicle, one van and 10 dumper pressure dustbins along with 70 workers.
However, the workers of Imphal were barred from entering the festival venue yesterday.
The visitor's entry fee of Rs.20 was even charged from the workers engaged in the cleanliness work, Umesh lamented.
He further said that the highhanded attitude of festival organizers has hurt the dignity of the elected councillors.
There was even goof up in the invitation sent to the Chairperson of IMC at the last hour.
Instead of the incumbent Chairperson A Nimai, former Chairperson Raghumani's name was printed on the invitation card.
The IMC has decided to suspend all works related to cleaning the venue of the ongoing Sangai Festival in view of such high-handed attitude of the tourism officials, the Chairperson of Public Health and Sanitary Committee announced.
The press briefing was also attended by the Chairperson of IMC A Nimai Sharma and other councillors.
