Imphal, August 01 2011:
The Transporters and Drivers' Council expressing serious concern alleged that the BRO had mishandled or misused crores of rupees and appealed to the Centre and State Governments to take up appropriate immediate action against BRO at the earliest in public interest.
Speaking to reporters in a press meet today, president of the council, H Ranjit said that a team of the council in a visit found the highway in a pitiable condition.
BRO, last year, had assured to make the stretch a world class highway by 2013.However, the council found only a muddy track.
Even though BRO claimed that they are utilizing around 2000 strong man power to repair the highway, the council found less than 100 workers along the 222 km long stretch.
In such situation, drivers feel unsafe plying on the stretch especially during the rainy season.
However the drivers are carrying out their duties in the general interest of the people.
All are aware that a kg of rice used to cost Rs 24 last year due to the 90 day economic blockade on the two highways.
Now, one can get a kg of rice only for Rs 10 and it is the reason of the commitment and sincerity of the drivers and transporters.
The present situation of the highway on which transporters are ferrying PDS items is due to the efforts of TDC who laid stone loads at various places in the highway.
