ECI team in state to assess election issues

Imphal, August 05 2011:
The Election Commission of India will take up strict security measures to prevent use of money and might in the forthcoming state assembly elections which is likely to be held in February next year, said Chief Election Commissioner Dr S Y Qureshi in a press meet held today at the conference hall of Manipur Secretariat.
S Y Qureshi was leading an Election Commission team who arrived in Imphal today.
The team which includes election commissioners VS Sampat, H Verman and deputy election commissioner JP Prakash arrived Imphal around 11 am.
Qureshi said he met representatives of seven political parties in the state and discussed about the stock of situation in the state.
After discussing the complaints and proposals of the various political parties, he said the ECI will discuss the matter seriously and do whatever is needed to prevent used of money and might in the elections.
ECI will also monitor the expenditure of candidates in the elections to check use of money power.
He also told that he had instructed District Election Officers to issue photo electoral cards in time.
Meanwhile, state election office sources said that the assembly elections in Manipur might be preponed but a final decision would be decided by the ECI.
The ECI team left for New Delhi today evening at 5 pm.
