Imphal, August 05 2011:
All the Ministers, MLAs and IAS/MCS officers as well as the public in Manipur are in support of the Sadar Hills District Demand Committee.
But unfortunately the Demand Committee is harassing the drivers and conductors of the trucks who are bringing essential commodities for the people of the State even to the extent of attacking them with stones, president of United Club National Highway 37 Thongam Shyama Khabanganba has lamented.
Addressing a press meet at Sagolband Moirang Hanuba community hall today, Khabanganba observed that the drivers and conductors have been risking their lives for the sake of the people in the State.
But what they get in return is Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 at the end of the month for maintaining their lives and constant harassment from all sides.
Khabanganba appealed to the Demand Committee to undertake some other form of democratic protest in pursuance of its demand instead of taking recourse to violence.
The Demand Committee can submit memorandum to the State Govt through DC, SP, ADC office, SDO/SDC or organise Dharna and take out protest rally, he suggested.
The Demand Committee should understand that all the 27 lakh people in Manipur are in support of upgrading Sadar Hills into a full-fledged revenue district, he added.
Khabanganba further observed that without approaching the Centre over setting up of the proposed Highway Protection Force, the State Government can recruit the educated jobless youths in the State for the purpose of highway protection and setting up outpost after every one kilometres along the National Highways.
This way the problem of law and order in the hill districts can also be improved.
