Imphal, April 17 2022:
The North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS) staged a protest demonstration along with other organisations at Arts Faculty, Delhi University against the alleged initiative to impose Hindi on the non-Hindi speaking regions.
A press release issued by NEFIS continued that the Centre must withdraw its decision to impose Hindi on the non-Hindi speaking people.
NEFIS reminded that Union Home Minister Amit Shah recently announced to make Hindi a compulsory subject upto Class X in all North East States during the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee but the same has already been condemned by many as 'it is a step to promote Hindi chauvinism' .

Claiming that this latest attempt of the Union Government to impose Hindi makes it amply clear that the Centre is seeking to impose Hindi as a National language and exert Hindi chauvinism over other communities, NEFIS claimed that the step also gives undue importance to Hindi vis--vis other languages of non-Hindi speaking regions.
"Instead of creating more infrastructure to promote languages of non-Hindi speaking regions, the Ministry concerned seeks to impose its diktat on people from non-Hindi speaking backgrounds especially marginal/minority groups.
The statement only serves to promote cultural chauvinism," it added.
Continuing that this dismal situation is a result of the long standing bias and neglect on the part of the Central Government towards the minority groups and communities, NEFIS maintained that the fact that the languages of so many communities/marginal groups are not given due recognition is not accidental.
NEFIS also claimed that there was an attempt by Delhi University in 2013 to make Hindi compulsory without bothering how it would affect the students from the North-East and other parts of India but the same was withdrawn later.
Denouncing the statement of the Union Home Minister, NEFIS urged the Centre to withdraw its decision to impose Hindi on the non-Hindi speaking people.
It also asked the Union Home Minister to take back his words and warned of intensifying its movement if his statement is not taken back.
