Centre's Rs 100 crore orange boost

Besides special package aimed at boosting orange production in Tamenglong district, the Centre has approved necessary fund for development of Old Cachar Road.
The Central Government has approved special package of Rs 100 crore for enhancing orange production in Tamenglong district, informed MPCC president G Gaikhangam.
Gaikhangam, who is Congress MLA from Nungba assembly constituency in Tamenglong district, conveyed the Centre's package while attending a flagship programme of UPA and SPF Governments as well as Congress workers' conference held at Khoupum Gaidimjang on December 16 .
Addressing the public gathering as the chief guest, Gaikhangam highlighted that the Centre's package to Tamenglong district is in sync with the commitment of the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram during his recent visit to Senapati and Ukhrul district that an economic package would be announced for Tamenglong district as orange produced in the district is of very high quality.

Further informing that the recent fund allocation is for utilisation within a five-year period, the State Congress chief also confided that a detailed project report on orange farming/production in Tamenglong district is being prepared by the Horticulture Department.
The package will also cover setting up of processing unit and orange plantation in Tamenglong district considered highly suitable for growing oranges.
On the development of Old Cachar Road, he maintained that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has approved sanction of Rs 151 crores for the development of the historic route with the official fund release likely to be finalised before conduct of the 10 Manipur Legislative Assembly.
Gaikhangam also appealed to the people to extend cooperation as well as acknowledge various development works initiated by the Central Government for implementation by the Congress Government in Manipur.
Among others MLAs Thangthuanang Pamei and Govindas Konthoujam, and Tamenglong ADC chairman G Soihem Haomei were also present at the Khoupum Gaidimjang event.
