Imphal, June 12 2011:
Imphal East District Network, United NGOs Mission, Manipur (UNM-M) organised a mass protest rally cum public meeting on the prevailing situation in the State with special reference to 'Crime against women and children' at Khurai today.
�The demonstration is being organised with the primary objective to stop crime and violence against women and children in the State", said UNM-M Secretary Nabakishore.
The rally started from Lamlong bridge and culminated at Khurai Laikhurembi Shanglen, where the public meeting was held.
The rallyists held placards that read as 'Save Women Save Children', 'Reform State Police', 'Wake up 60 MLAs' etc.
Social Welfare Director G Seityabati, senior journalist K Madhumangol, Rose Mangsi Haokip of Kuki Mothers' Association and President of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union A Mobi were present at the public meeting.
Families of the victims narrated their ordeal in the meeting which took nine resolutions � standing united by local clubs and NGOs against women and children related crimes, constituting of gender sensitive investigation team which includes lady police officers, providing economic assistance to victim families, establishment of State Commission for Protection of Child Rights immediately, early punishment to culprits, inclusion of gender issues, human rights and violence against women and children in the school syllabus starting from the Primary level.
