Imphal, February 12 2013:
Taking serious note of traffic within Imphal city, the State Government has decided to send a proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways for construction of a bypass road in lieu of the NH-2 section which passes through Imphal city during the next financial year.
The State Government has already conducted survey for the bypass road along two different routes, informed a source.
The first route surveyed by the Government is Sekmai-Leikinthabi-NillakuthiMaiba Khul, Mongjang-Heingang and Lilong where it would be re-connected to NH-2 .
The second possible bypass route is Khonghampat-LamdengLangjing and Manipur University where it would merge with NH-2 .
Though the State Government is ready to construct the bypass road along any of these two routes, it has not yet decided which would be more preferable.
The proposal would be included in the work programme of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways during the next financial year so that a final survey can be conducted after hiring a consultant.

However as of now it remains undecided whether the highway bypass would be constructed in Imphal East district or Imphal West district.
Whether the bypass is constructed in Imphal East or Imphal, the State Government would face certain problems while constructing the bypass either way as per its own survey report.
Though the bypass would constructed as a National Highway, it may be required to upgrade it to the status of a super highway with the passage of time.
As such, the bypass would pass right in front of private residences for a large portion of its length which would cause a lot of inconveniences if it is constructed in Imphal East.
Another matter is, there is an urgent need to study the traffic problems of Manipur before constructing the bypass.
Presently, inter-state trucks are allowed to move into the heart of Imphal.
Even though there is a plan to construct an inter-State truck terminus under the North Eastern Council, the State Government is unable to provide the necessary plot.
It is important to construct the highway bypass by keeping in mind where the inter-State truck terminus should be constructed, added the source.
